About Henley in Arden

Hidden deep amonst the leafy lanes of Warwickshire, close to what little remains of the ancient Forest of Arden, lies the pleasant Market town of Henley-in-Arden.

This is a town that is full of old and interesting buildings. Oak timbered properties are interspersed all along the main street, they date from the 15th, 16th, and 17th-centuries, they are beautifully preserved and one can well understand why Henley High Street has been designated a conservation area. The half timbered Guildhall is a magnificent example of Elizabethan style and architecture, it dates from 1448. Proclamations have been made from the 15th-century Market Cross for over 5 centuries and recent proclamations include the accession of our present Queen, Elizabeth II, and that of Her Majesty's Silver Jubilee in 1977.

The parish church of St.John the Baptist dates 1448 and replaced an earlier church. It is in the perpendicular style and the square turreted topped tower has a clock. The interior of the church is extremely beautiful, there is a magnificent alter and intricately carved oak choir backed by a fine stained glass window. The present Lady Chapel, a later addition, contains some fine examples of local craftsmanship. Most recently, in celebration of the millenium, a new stained glass window has been added to the church. It is a glorious vision of modern art and depicts Christ in Henley High Street.

No matter where you go in Henley there are reminders that you are surrounded by Shakespeare country, Mary Arden's house is close-by, so too, is Anne Hathaway's cottage. The area is awash with picturesque thatched cottages and mellow brick wistaria clad farmhouses enclosed by fields grazed with lazy cattle and frolicking lambs. It is a very English scene that causes the visitor to reach for their camera at every turn, for round every corner is a fresh delight.

Henley-in-Arden has some fine inns and restaurants, good shops and some specialist antique and art shops. It is an enchanting market town that is worthy of your time.
